The 20-year anniversary of JDR is not just a milestone for the company but also a testament to the vision and resilience of its founder, David Roberts. In conversation on the Digital Prosperity podcast, Dave discusses his journey, the highs and lows of entrepreneurship, and his outlook for the company’s future.
In 2004, David Roberts set out with a clear vision: to build a thriving business that helps other business owners to succeed. With a background in teambuilding and coaching, David was confident that his experience, dedication, and hard work would deliver success. Although, initially, he established JDR as a business coaching service, he never imagined that the company would, over the years, become a leading digital marketing agency.
‘I was absolutely confident we’d build a business, though I wasn’t sure about the path it would take,’ he recalls, emphasising that his early expectations were rooted in a passion for helping others to effectively manage their time, people, and money.'
David’s determination to become his own boss was inspired in part by the experiences of his father, who had built his own business in Jamaica - a bakery that, despite its promise, never fulfilled its true potential.
As a child, David witnessed firsthand the challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship. ‘I wanted to be the master of my own destiny,’ he explains. For him, JDR was a way to honour his father’s memory and to prove that, with perseverance, even humble beginnings can lead to significant achievements. His passion for helping small business owners while following in the footsteps of his father fuelled his determination to succeed.
Building JDR was far from uneventful and from the outset, David knew that challenges would emerge. Over the years, JDR had to navigate a rapidly changing digital landscape. In the early years, social media platforms were in their infancy, and the digital marketing arena was a nascent field.
‘We had to adapt continuously,’ David explains, noting how the company transitioned from coaching to become a leading digital marketing agency. He highlights that the secret to overcoming difficulties was to surround himself with talented people who shared his vision and values. By establishing a dedicated team, JDR could innovate, pivot during economic downturns, and remain resilient during periods of uncertainty.
When asked about his favourite moments in the past 20 years, David highlights the day JDR became an Elite HubSpot partner: a proud moment that affirmed the company’s commitment to quality and integrity. Yet he is quick to acknowledge that the journey wasn’t always smooth, with rapid changes to the digital marketing landscape, the global financial crisis of 2007-2011, and the 2020-2022 Covid-19 pandemic.
‘There were moments when it seemed like everything was against us,’ he admits. However, challenging times taught him invaluable lessons about perseverance, innovation, and the importance of a supportive team.
Looking ahead, Dave feels optimistic about the JDR’s future, even with developments in digital marketing. Emerging technologies like AI are reshaping the industry, so versatility, he says, is essential: ‘We won’t be doing digital marketing in five years exactly the same way we do today’.
Although global domination is not an ambition, David remains focused on maintaining JDR’s position as a leader in innovation and talent retention. With plans to balance work with personal time, David envisions JDR securing its legacy for many years. JDR’s journey, from ambitious start-up to market leader, reflects the spirit of entrepreneurship: an unyielding drive to innovate, adapt, and prosper, no matter what challenges lie ahead.
